Index the data people need to inspect
Define the chain’s block, transaction and address relationships before designing search. The indexer needs a checkpoint and a repeatable backfill process. Specialized chain features may require custom views rather than forcing the data into an explorer intended for another protocol.
Reorganizations and data integrity
A block can leave the canonical chain after a reorganization. The indexing pipeline must detect that change, reverse affected derived records and replay the correct history. API responses should distinguish pending and finalized information so downstream applications do not treat uncertain state as settled.
Search, interfaces and operation
Search can route a block height, transaction identifier or address to the correct view. Pagination and bounded queries keep large histories usable. Monitoring should report indexing lag and source-node failures; a successful web response does not necessarily mean the displayed chain data is current.
What the scope can include
- Checkpointed indexer and chain data model
- Explorer interface and documented data endpoints
- Reorg handling and indexing-lag monitoring

Questions & answers
What data can a custom blockchain explorer display?
Typical views include blocks, transactions, addresses and network status. Available fields depend on the chain, and specialized execution or account models may require custom indexing logic.
How do you handle reorgs in an indexer?
Track block ancestry, identify the common ancestor and reverse affected records before replaying canonical blocks. The data model and tests need to make this operation repeatable.
